The Tampa Bay Lightning announced Tuesday that they have re-signed forward J.T. Miller to a five-year extension worth $5.25 million per season:

Miller, 25, was acquired in a blockbuster trade at the deadline that also brought over former New York Rangers captain, Ryan McDonagh. He scored 10 goals and 18 points in 19 regular season games with Tampa Bay. Miller finished the 2017-18 campaign with 23 goals and 58 points

He was the perfect addition for general manager Steve Yzerman, boosting Tampa to an Atlantic Division title and a trip to the Eastern Conference Final - where they fell to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals in seven games.

Miller has tallied at least 20 goals and 40 points in the last three seasons. Given his young age and tremendous fit with Tampa, this is a great contract for Yzerman - who has developed a reputation as one of the league's best negotiators.

With the Miller signing, Tampa only has a bit over $5 million in salary cap space, according to CapFriendly.com. They've been rumored as a possible destination for John Tavares, but this likely takes them out of the running - when you consider superstar Nikita Kucherov is in need of a major extension for next year.

But the Lightning don't necessarily need to add the New York Islanders superstar. Let's keep in mind they've reached three of the last four Eastern Conference Finals - even reaching the Stanley Cup in 2015 - where they fell to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Yzerman has gotten a bulk of his top players to sign team-friendly extensions, including Brayden Point, Steven Stamkos, Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevskiy. With Miller now under a relatively cheap deal for the long-term, Yzerman is ensuring the Stanley Cup window stays open even longer.
