Following their altercation outside of Las Vegas' MGM Grand on Thursday, Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho are set to square off at All Elite Wrestling's Double or Nothing event.
As much has been announced by the new promotion's Twitter account, with the big-name stars set to add to the highly-anticipated AEW showcase in Vegas on May 25. The match had also been confirmed on Being The Elite's 138th episode.
Omega and Jericho have rekindled the rivalry that stems from 2017, when Jericho attacked the former at New Japan Pro Wrestling's Power Struggle. The pair also squared off at Wrestle Kingdom 12 last January, a bout in which Omega beat Jericho in a No Disqualification match to successfully defend the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship.
Last September's All In event also saw Jericho assault Omega with two Codebreakers while disguised as Pentagon.
The veteran wrestlers are undoubtedly the biggest stars AEW has signed so far and they've wasted no time getting back into the fire.
Jericho was announced as a member of the new company at a rally in Jacksonville last month, having parted ways with the WWE, while Omega announced his arrival at the Double or Nothing Ticket Announcement Party last week.
The latter became a free agent after his NJPW contract expired in January and was wanted by the WWE. His former employers made him offers to return as well.
“[WWE] is absolutely not a risk,” the new AEW performer told the Wrestling Observer podcast in a recent interview. “Part of me was like do I want to shut my brain off and have people write for me and tell me what to do? It sounds kind of cool actually.
“I felt I needed to go to a place where I could do more,” Omega explained. “Japan will always be a home to me and I’m always going to be back. AEW for me, or WWE, kind of seemed like the next step, potential dream matches and all that and using the new platform, not necessarily a better one or a bigger one or whatever. I just wanted a new platform to reach new people.”
What This Means
The emergence of AEW has left many wrestling fans excited; and what other way to make a mark than to pit the likes of Omega and Jericho against each other to kick things off?
The only downside is the match being over three months away. But it's very likely to be worth the wait.
