Kenny Omega has revealed AEW is hoping its first mainline video game will be released within the next 12 months.

AEW is taking the video game corner of its company very seriously. Towards the tail end of 2020, the company held a showcase during which a number of different announcements were made. The headline from the showcase was the reveal of the very first trailer for a full AEW video game. Kenny Omega and other AEW stars had hinted it was happening, and the showcase was confirmation, as well as the reveal that Yuke's is developing the project.

Omega recently spoke with talkSPORT and revealed a few more details regarding how the game is coming along. "I would say in a perfect world, give it about a year’s time," Omega revealed. The Cleaner doesn't want the project to take years and risk interest disappearing. However, he also clarified everyone involved doesn't want to rush the game and end up in a Cyberpunk-type situation.

In terms of the wrestling video game market right now, AEW couldn't have arrived at a better time. WWE 2K games had been accused of basically being the same game with an updated roster each year. That all came to a head via the disastrous release of WWE 2K20. The game was received so poorly that 2K decided to skip WWE 2K21 and will instead focus on WWE 2K22.

An extra year to focus on the next game or not, many video game-playing wrestling fans will have lost faith in WWE 2K and are looking for something new. That something new could be here by this time next year and is being created by video game-loving wrestlers. Omega, of course, and also referee Aubrey Edwards who worked in game development before making the switch to wrestling.

Other than the mainline game it is working on, AEW is also developing a GM-style mobile game that is set to arrive at some point in 2021. Wrestling games are a corner of the business that are there for the taking right now. If AEW can strike a balance between releasing its games in a timely manner and making sure they are exactly what fans want, it could get a serious leg up on WWE.
