The Splash Brother says he has no desires to leave the team that drafted him in 2011, yet he will test the free agency next year when his contract ends. He could negotiate a contract extension this season and assure his future with the team in which he won three NBA championships, so why test the 2019 free agency anyway?

At an event to promote the Thompson Family Foundation’s first charity golf tournament, Klay Thompson, in an interview with Mark Medina of the San Jose Mercury News and said that he would like to play for the Golden State Warriors for the rest of his professional career.

“I’ve said it many times before: I would like to be a Warrior for life. Contract negotiations are way down the line. But I think we all have the same interest. I would love to be here for the rest of my career.”

When Medina asked Thompson if he would consider signing an extension with the Warriors before hitting the open market next season, the three-time NBA champion said it could be an option, but it sounded more like an option B.

“It’s tough to say. I’d definitely be interested. But at the end of the day, I’m going to be a free agent in 2019. Number one on my list would obviously be to stay with the Warriors.”

This season, Thompson's four-year contract ends, and a bunch of rumors of where he will land next season have spread, placing him playing in Los Angeles next to Lebron James or with the New York Knicks next season. However, it’s quite unlikely to see the number eleven wearing a different uniform other than the Dubs' one next year. Yes, he has lost prominence on the team since Durant’s arrival, but you don’t leave a dynasty who could be considered the best of all time just for selfish reasons (at least not a player like Thompson).

Mychal Thompson, Klay’s dad, made clear at the same charity event that his son will not leave the Bay Area next season by no means.

“Oh yeah, you can mark it down, Klay’s going to retire in the Warriors’ uniform. He’s going to play at Chase Center [the Warriors’ San Francisco arena, opening in 2019], and he’s not going to be at Chase Center as a visiting player, he’s going to be a Warrior for the next seven or eight years.”

So, it seems that Klay Thompson will join an impressive list of players for the 2019 free agency such as Kevin Durant, Kyrie Erving, Kawhi Leonard, and Jimmy Butler. However, the sole objective of hitting the free market next summer would be to get a better contract.

The four-time NBA All-Star wants to make history but making a little bit more money in the process would not hurt at all.
