Kofi Kingston faces a gargantuan task if he wants to make it to WrestleMania. In fact, he will have to achieve something no other WWE Superstar has ever done.
Vince McMahon has a habit of getting in the way of Superstars who the fans get behind. Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, Becky Lynch. Whether he is doing it out of spite or to create an angle will likely forever remain unclear. Either way, the latest Superstar to get the McMahon treatment is Becky Lynch.
Mr. McMahon has been cutting Kingston off at every turn in his attempts to become WWE Champion. The latest in the saga happened on this week's SmackDown Live. The chairman promised Kingston a chance to compete for the WWE Title at WrestleMania. That opportunity comes in the form of a gauntlet match on next Tuesday's show during which the New Day member will have to defeat five other men.
Those men will be Randy Orton, Sheamus, Cesaro, Samoa Joe, and Rowan. If he defeats all five one after the other, he will presumably get a shot at Daniel Bryan on the grandest stage of them all. That's a tall order that becomes even taller when you go back through history. According to WWE Stats & Info on Twitter, history is not on Kingston's side.
No @WWE Superstar has ever won a Gauntlet Match in which they were responsible for eliminating more than 4 opponents in a row all by his/herself.— WWE Stats & Info (@WWEStats) March 13, 2019
In 1999, @steveaustinBSR eliminated 5 straight members of The Corporation on #RAW before falling to the 6th opponent - @VinceMcMahon. https://t.co/x0pOsqBuCT
That's because no WWE Superstar has ever won a gauntlet match during which they have been responsible for eliminating four or more other wrestlers. There is a glimmer of hope, though. In 1999, Stone Cold did defeat five opponents in a row during a gauntlet match on Raw. However, he came up short against the sixth. That man? Mr. McMahon. We know the boss has been getting in Kingston's way a lot lately, but we can't see him interjecting himself as a sixth opponent next week.
That means Kingston will need to channel his inner-Austin this coming Tuesday if he wants to make it to WrestleMania. The multi-time Tag Team Champion does have very recent precedent in gauntlet matches, though. Prior to Elimination Chamber, Kingston wrestled in a gauntlet match for more than an hour. One of the men he defeated in that match was the WWE Champion, and also a man he will face this Tuesday, Samoa Joe.
