WWE champion Kofi Kingston is poised to return to Ghana, the country of his birth, for the first time in 26 years, this time with a world title.

The 37-year-old -  whose birth name is Kofi Nahaje Sarkodie-Mensah - was born in Kumasi, Ashanti, Ghana, in 1981 but moved to the US with his family in 1982. He hasn't been back since 1993.

Kofi played a Jamaican wrestler during his early WWE days but it's now well-known that he's actually Ghanaian born.

"Well it’s officially official. For the first time since 1993, I’m going back to my home country!" the superstar announced via his Instagram account on Friday. "Though it was 26 years ago, I still have so many vivid memories of my last visit to Ghana. I’m beyond excited to make many more in a few short weeks!"

WWE also noted this in a press release, revealing that a company film crew will be documenting the wrestler's four-day visit, which starts on May 30. The trip will cover a children's rally, visits to the hometowns of both of Kofi's parents, a courtesy call on Ghana's president and a visit to the Asante Monarch.

"Kofi Kingston is going home. And, of course, he’s got a little extra luggage to take with him this time around," the press release reads.

"The WWE Champion revealed Friday on Instagram that he is planning his first visit to his home country of Ghana, West Africa since 1993 — part of a celebratory “Year of Return” in the wake of winning his first World Championship.

"A WWE film crew will be documenting the four-day visit, which includes a children’s rally, visits to Kofi’s maternal and paternal hometowns, as well as a courtesy call on the Ghanaian president, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and a visit to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asante Monarch."

What This Means

Well, for one, Kofi's going to remain champion at least until he returns to the States.

2019 is turning out to be quite the year for the New Day member. Winning his first championship at WrestleMania 35 must have ushered one of the best feelings ever. But going back home after this long has to be extra special, considering he's returning as one of the most popular persons on the planet.
