After questions about the severity of Lonzo Ball's knee injury, it was reported by the team Ball would be undergoing arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday.

The Lakers second-year point guard has been discussed often during this year's NBA offseason. Some of it had to do with what the Lakers might do to grab another big-name to play with LeBron James and some of it was simple concern that Lonzo wasn't as badly injured as it may appear. The recent announcement by the Lakers that Ball will need surgery has put some of that concern to rest.

Ball will undergo surgery on Tuesday, the Lakers’ PR department tweets. They add that an update on his prognosis will be made after the surgery. But, as Sam Amick of USA Today tweets, Ball is expected to be back in time for the NBA regular season and competing for the starting point guard job with newly acquired Rajon Rondo, who the Lakers grabbed this summer in free agency.

News of the surgical procedure doesn’t come as a total surprise and it was being reported the Lakers were exploring options about how to deal with what was ailing one of their future stars. Ball was dealing with knee issues for much of the 2017-18 season and it was later revealed Ball had a torn meniscus in the knee.

It now appears that the rumors of Rondo being acquired as a "message" to Ball may, in fact, be more about the Lakers getting protection at the point guard spot in the event Ball's injury may be more severe than anticipated.

Ball will spend the offseason rehabbing from surgery and will then try and fit into a LeBron-led Lakers team that he badly wanted to be a part of. It was the rumored timing from Ball's camp about the announcement of his injury that led people to question the severity of it in the first place.

Once cleared, Ball will try to improve on his previous season's averages of 10.2 PPG, 6.9 RPG, and 7.2 APG where he shot just 36% from the field.
