While WWE was hoping Lars Sullivan's surfaced controversial comments would go away on their own, it appears a major sponsor is now involved and is expecting answers.
By now, Sullivan's series of comments on message boards and social media is not news. Sullivan has even addressed the comments he made years back in which he went on racists, homophobic and bigoted rants, saying this is not who he is now and that he apologizes for having offended anyone.
When WWE was reached for comment, one wrestling media outlet suggested that their response was that they were aware of the comments, hoped they would go away on their own and everyone could simply sweep all this under the rug. Considering their own Superstars like Big E and Kalisto were commenting, it wasn't a good look.
Now, it appears big money is getting involved as one of WWE's major sponsors has responded to a fan and is expecting some kind of communication from WWE about the subject.
A WWE fan wrote the following message to Mars (h/t to Wrestling INC):
“Dear Snickers, one of the companies you sponsor, the WWE is heavily featuring a wrestler by the name of Lars Sullivan(portrayed by Dylan Miley) who has made many internet comments praising mass shooters, espousing hatred and mocking black, mentally ill, and gay people. Does that represent Mars as a company? If so, I’ll have to choose a different snack brand that more identifies with American values.”
While, at the end of the day, one person not buying their candy bars won't hurt the company, Mars did realize this one fan's opinion may reflect a similar feeling by many of their consumers. They wasted no time in responding.
“Dear Loyal Consumer,
Thank you for reaching out to Mars Wrigley Confectionaery with your comments.
We learned of Lars Sullivan’s comments recently and share in your shock and disgust. As a values-based company, we find his behavior abhorrent and unacceptable. We have engaged the WWE to discuss this situation and seek to understand what actions they will take to swiftly address this matter.
We hope this information is helpful and wish you a great day!
Your Friends at Mars Wrigley Confectionery”
What This Means
Lars Sullivan is still on tour with WWE and was currently a part of the SmackDown show this weekend. But for how long?
It appeared WWE wasn't going to do anything about it but that may change if sponsors like Mars are getting on WWE and wanting some answers. Can Vince and co. really just not do anything? Will they suspend Lars? Will they fire him?
If there's one thing we know, WWE is not about to let big money and a major sponsor walk. If it comes down to losing Mars or losing Lars, one would have to guess that Lars Sullivan will be on the first trip home from the tour and maybe gone from WWE for good.
