SLAM is one of the most influential magazines in the basketball world. In 1998, the magazine put on its cover a woman for the first time; today, 20 years later, a woman comes back to the cover and definitely, her name will be remembered in the history of professional women's basketball—Maya Moore.

Maya plays for the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA, and despite her young age, she has already won it all. Even before starting her professional career, she had already made herself a name as an outstanding basketball player. During her high school, Moore led her team to an incredible record of 125-3 in four seasons and a National Championship. Later in the NCAA, she became the first freshman, male or female, to be named the Big East Player of the Year and helped her team to win the championship in 2009 and 2010. The 29-year-old player started her professional career winning rookie of the year and got the MVP in 2014 when she scored a career-high 48 points — the second highest single-game total in WNBA history. She has also won the championship four times among so many other ridiculous achievements that she has accomplished on and off the court.

Perhaps these were more than enough reasons for SLAM to put on its cover another woman after 20 years when Chamique Holdsclaw appeared for the first time. It is important to highlight the great job that the magazine did, showing all of the features of the 2014 MVP, not only as a professional basketball player but also as a role model for the new generations of women players to come.

To be on the cover of such a relevant basketball magazine is just another achievement for the successful career of Maya Moore. Nevertheless, this is a huge step for the inclusion of women in the basketball world, considering that SLAM readers are mostly men (89 percent), which adds to a series of recent events of female inclusion, such as Becky Hammon becoming the first female assistant coach in NBA history with the San Antonio Spurs and the addition of female players in NBA video games.
