The Denver Nuggets have announced coming to an agreement over a contract extension with head coach Mike Malone.

According to ESPN's NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Malone was heading into the last year of his deal, but he has received a two-year extension from the team, which he hopes to improve even more over the course of the newly-opened season.

“As these conversations have been ongoing, I never let it affect my approach,” Malone said at the Nuggets’ shootaround, via the Denver Post. “Whether I have an extension or I don’t have an extension, I’m not going to coach any differently. I only know one way.

"I’m fully committed, I’m excited to be here, and I want to be here and to have an ownership group and a front office that feels the same way is great. And as I mentioned, humbling is the best word I can come up with. Now it’s OK, taking care of business.”

The 47-year-old did admit that the situation was weighing on his mind. and he's now relieved to have it out of the way heading into the season.

“You’re going into the last year of your contract, it’s never an ideal situation,” he explained. “But also at the same time, I never had any doubt that this would get done. My conversations and relationships with Tim (Connelly) and Josh (Kroenke) throughout the summer have been nothing but positive.

"I never once felt like, ‘Gee, I don’t know If I’m really the guy here.’ All along I felt that something would get done at some point. When? I wasn’t sure. But honestly, the best thing about it is getting that news out now so we can of turn the page and get ready for the game tonight.”

Malone has been coaching the Nuggets since 2015 and the team has missed the playoffs by just one game in both of the past two seasons. He has also pushed them to improved records in each of the last three campaigns, with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Boston Celtics being the other two teams to record an increase in regular season wins over the period.

“I’m very happy for him,” veteran forward Paul Millsap declared. “He definitely deserved it for what he’s done over the course of the years. Now practices won’t be as tough. But to see a smile on his face this morning, to see how amped he is about the season, it makes you want to get out there and win games for him. You want a guy like that to succeed.”
