There was a point during Darren Young's WWE career where he almost became Intercontinental Champion, and the titleholder at the time was all for it.

Every now and again WWE has something of a clear out of the company's Superstars. Like a spring cleaning session, but it doesn't always take place in the spring. The last of these happened in October 2017. Emma, Summer Rae, and Darren Young were the victims of Vince McMahon's axe, all being wished well on their future endeavors.

Unfortunately, the release of Young didn't come as much of a surprise. The only time WWE really tried to make something of him under its roof was when he was paired with Bob Backlund, and it turns out that was all Young's idea. The former Tag Team Champion was a guest on the Two Man Power Trip podcast and revealed that he had the idea to have Backlund act as his mentor before he had even finished his run alongside Titus O'Neil.

"I knew it would work. I had the visuals and I had it all written out and we looked at it and [McMahon] was amazed by it," Young explained. He also spoke of the crowd starting to get behind him and the WWE Hall Of Famer as a double act and that it almost led to him getting an Intercontinental Title run. Even The Miz was behind the idea and he was the IC Champion at the time.

"[Miz] was actually for me beating him for the Intercontinental title at Battleground," Young revealed, however, certain people higher up on the totem pole didn't like the idea. "You’ve got some favorites and not so favorites and I guess I wasn’t a favorite to someone under Vince." It meant Young's rivalry with Miz just came to a natural end rather than one where the former Superstar ended up with singles gold around his waist.

Young hasn't let his lack of championships in WWE or his eventual release from the company dampen his love of pro wrestling. He continues to compete on the independent circuit and is actually one half of the NBWF Tag Team Champions with fellow WWE alum, Sawyer Fulton. Fulton was released from NXT at around the same time as Young parted ways with the company.
