The Miz recently recalled a time when Vince McMahon convinced him to dress up as The Rock to fool fans, and it worked.
The Miz has had a career in WWE unlike anyone else. The Superstar earned a place for himself in the wacky world of pro wrestling after earning fame as a reality TV star. That meant right off the bat, not many in the business had respect for him. That goes for both the fans and the Superstars in the locker room.
Although fans and wrestlers might not have liked him, someone backstage evidently did. That's because by 2010, Miz was WWE Champion. The first and only time he has held the title to date. The Awesome One himself would likely admit that was too soon. However, fast forward another nine years and you could argue that Miz is currently one of WWE's most valuable assets.
A story Miz recently told during an appearance on Barstool Sports may shed some light on who exactly had his back in 2010. Vince McMahon. The boss convinced Miz to dress as The Rock during The Great One's feud with John Cena. Not just that, but he wanted Miz, who was WWE Champion at the time, to wear his Rock costume out in front of the fans in order to fool them into thinking he was actually The Rock.
"I am not 6'5". I am not Samoan. I don't have tattoos. I am not bald," Miz revealed he explained to Mr. McMahon. The chairman was having none of it though and insisted the fans would fall for it. With that, Miz put on a Rock t-shirt, bald cap, and sunglasses and went out to the surefire Hall Of Famer's music. " I enter the arena and all of a sudden I hear another eruption. They believe it's The Rock! But it's me."
Miz continued to pull off Rock's stance, even take off his sunglasses without fans realizing it wasn't really who they wanted him to be. It wasn't until he started to walk down the ramp that fans started to realize it wasn't really Rock. However, he points out that people started to boo and obviously hated him, so Mr. McMahon's plan worked. When Miz asked him how he knew it would work, he told him he knew the fans wouldn't be looking at him and were just "mesmerized by the moment."
