Houston Rockets veteran Nene Hilario has shared his thoughts on the team's decision to drop Carmelo Anthony.

The pair were teammates on the Denver Nuggets for eight years before the latter was traded to the New York Knicks. They became reunited in Houston this year, with Nene having joined the team in 2016 after a stint with the Washington Wizards and Melo getting signed during the summer.

Unfortunately, more so for Melo, they're now set for another breakup. The Rockets have announced that they will be parting ways with the 10-time All-Star after just 10 games, following a shockingly poor start to the campaign.

Meanwhile, Nene will return to the team next week after recovering from a calf injury and will continue on in their second unit.

And, speaking to The Undefeated's Marc J. Spears, he described Anthony as still being a great player who simply wasn't a good fit for the Rockets.

“Melo has always been a great player, legendary, a Hall of Famer,” he said. “But it’s like having a beautiful picture that is supposed to be a puzzle. It doesn’t matter how beautiful the picture is if the puzzle doesn’t fit. Melo is still a great player. He just didn’t fit here. It’s hard.

“He can still play in this league. I can only speak for myself and what happened with me. It’s all the same. When you’ve been in the league, you have to understand that time goes. Things change and you got to change yourself. A lot of older players like Vince Carter change themselves and accept new [styles]. I accepted a new [style], too.”

What This Means

Whether or not Anthony still has something to offer another team is yet to be seen; they'd have to come knocking first, of course. The player is in good health and is still able to score, admittedly not as efficiently. However, there are lingering questions, given his age and recent history.

Can he accept a lesser role on a team? Can he adjust his game to suit another playing style?

Clearly, the above weren't answered in Houston. While the player is said to have gotten on board with everything the Rockets asked, he wasn't really afforded a proper chance.
