You might not even remember it anymore, but there was a time when The New Day was a heel faction. But that was actually the character change they needed to get over, as prior to their heel turn, WWE fans were nonplussed by their “power of positivity” gimmick, eagerly chanting “New Day sucks!” during their over-the-top ring entrances. In a recent interview, New Day members Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods looked back on that game-changing heel run of theirs, among other topics, and shared what they miss the most about being bad guys.

Speaking to The Undefeated, The New Day talked about their fonder memories of the time they were heels, expertly trolling audiences and showing much more of their personalities than they did with the forced, gospel-inspired babyface gimmick they debuted with. Standing out among those memories were the occasions when the faction insulted local sports teams, as well as their players and coaches, including Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones, and then-Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly.

Aside from those times when they roasted the local sports heroes, The New Day also enjoyed their heel interactions with children, where they’d threaten to have them grounded, or demand that they do their homework.

“It’s cool because you see everyone behind them that sees this kid interacting with us and losing their mind and they start doing the same thing; now everyone’s involved,” said Xavier Woods. “It was a cool way to not just involve that kid, who’s going to remember that for the rest of his life, but involve everyone else who’s also paying money to come to this show, this interactive experience. It’s something we’re not doing right now, but we might get back to it.”

While The New Day doesn’t seem to have any desire to make another heel turn just yet, they also don’t appear to be entertaining the idea of breaking up after about three years and a half as a faction. According to Big E, breaking up is a “terrible idea,” and anyone who suggests that the group should go their separate ways is a “wedge-driver.” He said that it’s still possible that each of the stable’s three members can enjoy success without having a breakup — for example, one of them can compete for a singles title, while the other two can focus on the tag team division.

Indeed, there are times when The New Day's shtick can feel tiring and repetitive, and it is interesting to consider what could happen if they split up, with one or more of them turning heel. But even after all those years, they're still entertaining more often than they're not, and if they keep on at the rate they've been going since 2015, they could make a good case for being one of WWE's best-loved and most successful stables of all-time.
