The New York Jets are set to interview former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase, according to NFL Network's Jeff Darlington.

Gase - who is also talking to the Arizona Cardinals - was fired by the Dolphins after a 7-9 season. The Jets fired head coach Todd Bowles after four years, with the latter compiling a total record of 24-40.

The decision to fire Gase came as a surprise to many, given his ability to squeeze out a handful of victories with an extremely flawed roster. Miami went 10-6 in 2016 and earned a Wild Card playoff berth, even though quarterback Ryan Tannehill was lost late in the season with a knee injury.

But after going 6-10 last season and 7-9 in 2017, the Dolphins decided it was time for a change. Miami had a slim chance at making the playoffs with a 7-6 record, but they wound up losing three straight games to close out the season. Thus, the offensive guru and 40-year-old Gase was let go.

The Jets haven't made the playoffs since the 2010 season, and despite a horrible 4-12 record, there is plenty to like about this roster. Young quarterback Sam Darnold and defensive cornerstones Jamal Adams and Leonard Williams provide plenty of optimism.

New York's new head coach will be lots of talent to build around, and Gase's brilliant offensive mind might mesh well with Darnold's abilities. There should be no doubting that the Jets will wind up hiring a coach with an offensive background, given their recent failures in hiring defensive-minded guys instead.

The Jets will be hiring just their third head coach dating back to the 2009 season, but with the franchise in the midst of a hopefully quick rebuild, the pressure is on to get this next one right.

What This Means

Gase certainly fits most of the requirements to be head coach of a Jets team with plenty of young talent, but there will obviously be other candidates for them to consider. It could be a couple of weeks until they make a decision.
