The New York Mets ownership, front office, coaches, players and fans will do everything in their power to erase the memory of a major embarrassment that took place in Washington on Tuesday night.

In what has already been considered an absolute disaster of the season, the Mets hit rock bottom with a humiliating 25-4 road loss to the Washington Nationals. And yes, this is the worst loss in franchise history.

On a more positive side, the Nationals became the first team to score 25-plus runs in a game since 2007 (The Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 30-30), per Jamal Collier of MLB.com.

The game was practically over after the first inning, when Washington jumped out to a 7-0 lead, thanks to doubles from slugger Bryce Harper and even pitcher Tanner Roark. The Nats would then post three runs in each of the next three innings, before adding six more in the bottom of the eighth.

The Nationals racked up 26 hits in the contest, with nine players posting an RBI. Anthony Rendon led the way with three hits and four RBI, while scoring twice himself. Harper - who was the subject of trade rumors during Tuesday's non-waiver deadline, went 2-for-4 with two hits and a pair of RBIs.

With the loss, the Mets fall to 44-60, which is surely the low point in what's been an absolutely awful season. The front office took a risk by not trading any of their core players at the deadline, and you have to think a major shakeup will be in order this offseason, given the embarrassment 2018 has been.

Now, this loss is just one of the 162 games the Mets will have played in all of 2018. But the 25-4 drubbing is simply one of the many signs that the Mets are in freefall, and there's no getting out of it any time soon.

On the bright side, the Yankees own the second best record in all of baseball. Fans in New York don't have to be sad over the Mets, when the Yankees are right up there among the top World Series contenders.
