Rusev recently revealed his "Rusev Day" gimmick was only supposed to be for one night.
Many people who watch SmackDown are familiar with the whole Rusev Day concept as it caught on with fans rather quickly. Today's heel personas have several added dimensions to their characters, including several quirky traits that include chants or some type of body gesture. Rusev was at one time a serious heel who did not generate laughs or smiles because of the seriousness of his character.
His nationalist heel persona alongside his real-life wife Lana, skyrocketed his brand and made him into the top star that he is today. After his winning streak ended with John Cena winning his title at Wrestlemania 31, his character has gone through several changes. He has changed his facial appearance several times, even resembling Hugh Jackman's Wolverine character at one point. After a brief hiatus due to injury, he eventually made his way to SmackDown and started teaming up with Aiden English. He was given a key to his home city of Plovdiv, and this is where Rusev Day began. What many people may not know is that Rusev Day was only supposed to be for one day and not a daily phenomenon.
Rusev recently revealed to ESPN the intention behind Rusev Day. He says that it was only supposed to be meant as a one day thing and that is it. He said that he did not expect for the Rusev Day chant to take off like it did. Rusev is even believing in the Rusev Day thing as his heel persona. His Twitter postings are riddled with Rusev Day messages, most of them coming from Rusev himself arrogantly proclaiming everyday is Rusev day.
"I had no idea this was going to happen," says Rusev to ESPN. "This was supposed to be a one-time 'Rusev Day' thing. I never thought in a million years it was going to be what it is today. It was something we planned to do, but just for one day. But it just caught on fire ever since then. Nobody expected that."
Rusev's character is taking a turn in another direction than what was originally planned for him. With his recent win alongside Lana over Bayley and Elias in the Mixed Match Challenge, he has further propelled himself into baby face territory. With the Rusev Day chants and the cheers accompanying Rusev as of late, he may very well become a baby face within the coming weeks.
