A former WWE writer revealed the original plans for the Shield, and it didn't involve Roman Reigns.

In 2012, The Shield made a shocking debut on the WWE main roster by attacking Ryback during the Survivor Series pay-per-view, allowing CM Punk to retain the WWE Championship. Over the course of the following weeks, WWE left fans in suspicion of whether the duo of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose were in cahoots with Punk, and Paul Heyman was the one who brought them to the roster as hitmen.

While this angle did not grow much steam, the Shield certainly did, as they ran roughshod throughout the WWE gang attacking multiple names on the roster, as well as legends such as The Undertaker.

While Reigns, Rollins, and Ambrose were the trio presented to the WWE Universe on television, former WWE writer Kevin Eck recently revealed that one person was not the original member: Roman Reigns.

According to Eck, the trio originally pitched was Rollins, Ambrose, and Kassius Ohno (Chris Hero). The idea was that Tommy Dreamer was going to introduce, Rollins, Ambrose, and Ohno during the Raw 1000 show. The trio was then going to compete against lower-card talent and win impressively, followed by calling Dreamer in the ring to thank him for the opportunity. Then, they were going to turn on Dreamer, and explain on the next Raw that they were just using him to get their foot in the door. Instead, they were going to have a new leader, which would be Daniel Bryan.

Eck's idea was partially used, as Ambrose and Rollins debuted as two-thirds of a trio. However, the use of Dreamer, Bryan, and Ohno, as well as this happening on Raw 1000, did not happen. Instead, CM Punk turned heel on The Rock that night.

According to Eck, Triple H stated that he already had Rollins and Ambrose in mind, but felt that Reigns was a better option than Ohno. Thus, The Shield was born, and lasted nearly two years before dissolving in 2014. The group reunited in 2017, but injuries caused it never to gain the steam that was desired.
