Arizona Cardinals star cornerback Patrick Peterson has requested a trade following the team's 1-5 start, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Cardinals’ All Pro CB Patrick Peterson has asked Arizona to deal him by the Oct. 30 trade deadline, per league sources. Peterson feels as if the situation is deteriorating and continues to reaffirm to others that he “desperately” wants out, per source.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 22, 2018
There's a dilemma to this, however. Schefter also noted that the Cardinals "insist they're not trading" Peterson, who has reiterated his request. Bryant McFadden of CBS Sports added that Peterson's preferred destination is the New Orleans Saints.
The 2018 NFL trade deadline is on Oct. 30, so the clock is ticking on a possible Peterson should, should the Cardinals decide to deal their franchise star.
Peterson has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his seven NFL seasons, and has is a three-time All-Pro selection. The 28-year-old has been one of the few standouts on a miserable Arizona team that sits at 1-5 on the season; they were embarrassed 45-10 by the struggling Denver Bronco in Week 7.
Peterson signed a five-year contract extension worth $70 million in 2014. Per Spotrac.com, Peterson has a cap hit of approx. $14.956 million this season. His cap hit moves down to about $11.884 million in 2019, and just over $13.184 million for 2020. But he's only 28 years of age and is still in his prime, so teams shouldn't be afraid of the remaining dollars on Peterson's contract.
Peterson has garnered an impressive 83.3 grade from Pro Football Focus, which places him in their "high quality" category. Whichever team adds Peterson will have a major boost in their secondary. There are simply few defensive players that bring the same kind of impact as Peterson.
Arizona reached the 2015 NFC Championship Game, but the team has completely unraveled ever since. They're headed for a third straight non-playoff year, and they figure to start a full-on rebuild after this season.
It probably makes sense for Arizona to trade its top defensive player, since they're nowhere close to playoff contention. Trading Peterson would surely land the front office several much-needed draft picks, but we'll see if Arizona goes that route as the trade deadline nears.
