The Carolina Hurricanes just needed a road contest with the one-win Detroit Red Wings to end their three game losing streak.

Oh, and a heroic performance from goalie Petr Mrazek - who went up against the team that he played for from 2012-13 to 2017-18. Mrazek made 20 saves to help preserve a 3-1 victory for Carolina.

Though it wasn't that busy of a night for Mrazek, he did have to make an unbelievable amount of saves in one short sequence. The Red Wings were oh-so-close to tying this game up on the power play with under five minutes left.

But Mrazek had other ideas - making a handful of amazing saves here to help Carolina hold on for the victory. Have a look at the breathtaking sequence below.

Mrazek got revenge on the team that traded him to the Philadelphia Flyers for two draft picks back in February, leading Carolina to its fifth win of the season. Mrazek is now 2-2-1 on the season with an .888 save percentage and 2.64 goals against average.

For the Red Wings, it was simply yet another frustrating loss in what's been a dismal season. They sit at 1-6-2, erasing any possible momentum after a 4-3 overtime road win over the Florida Panthers on Saturday.

With the victory, the Hurricanes now sit at 5-3-1 on the season and are first in the Metropolitan Division. New owner Thomas Dundon brought instant change, bringing in Don Waddell to become his new GM while hiring franchise legend Rod Brind'Amour as new head coach.

Carolina also traded away top players in Noah Hanifin, Elias Lindholm and Jeff Skinner in the offseason, but the changes have been positive in Carolina. Mrazek and Curtis McElhinney have been a fine duo in the crease, while Sebastian Aho leads the offense with 14 points in nine games.

The Hurricanes own the longest playoff drought in the NHL, having last qualified in 2009. They've been mired in mediocrity for a decade now, but they're off to an excellent start in 2018-19.

If Mrazek can play like the way he did on Monday, the Hurricanes are going to be a tough team to beat in 2018-19. That would give the team a long-term answer at goalie they've been longing for several years now.
