Just over a week after firing Ron Hextall, the Philadelphia Flyers have named Chuck Fletcher as their new general manager and executive vice president.

The statement reads that Fletcher was signed to "multi-year agreement." Fletcher was general manager of the Minnnesota Wild from 2009 to '18, building a team that has made the playoffs in each of the last six seasons.

"At the conclusion of a rigorous review of GM candidates, Chuck Fletcher clearly stood out from the field of talented and capable executives we considered," chairman and Comcast CEO Dave Scott said in the statement.

"Chuck has earned success throughout his impressive NHL career and offers the right mix of expertise, business acumen and leadership qualities that the Flyers need today as we work to achieve our ultimate goal, the Stanley Cup Championship."

Fletcher is the ninth GM in Flyers history, and he'll be tasked with helping the Flyers get back into championship contention. Since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2010, they've won just two playoff series - the last one coming in 2012.

The Flyers have been mired in mediocrity since 2013, making the playoffs just three times over that span. Playing in a market that's never short of expectations, Fletcher will try to build around a team that is heavy in veteran and young talent, but lacking in quality goaltending.

Fletcher took over a struggling Minnesota team after the 2008-09 season and built them into a contender after signing prized free agents Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. He also drafted studs in Mikael Granlund, Jason Zucker and Matt Dumba. Indeed, Fletcher has a strong track record that should have Flyer fans exited.

What This Means

The Flyers have too much talent to be this mediocre, so they're hoping a change in leadership at the top will change that. Fletcher has a great history when it comes to drafting, trading and free agency.

His first order of business will be determining the fate of head coach Dave Hakstol, who's been on the hot seat for a while now. With Joel Quenneville and Alain Vigneault among the many big names available, Fletcher could opt for a change behind the bench very soon.
