Seth Rollins defeated Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam to regain the new Universal Championship, and it sounds like WWE is moving towards a new challenger for The Architect.
According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Live (h/t Ringside News), Braun Strowman will go up against Rollins for the Universal Championship at the Clash of Champions pay-per-view. That's assuming Vince McMahon doesn't end up changing his mind, Meltzer suggested, which is something the WWE chairman tends to do aplenty.
Meltzer also suggested that Drew McIntyre could be an option to face Rollins, although he's still in a program with Cedric Alexander. Thus, it sounds like The Monster Among Men is getting another chance to win his first Universal Championship.
Strowman appeared at the end of this week's episode of Monday Night Raw, rescuing Rollins and Ricochet as they were being attacked by A.J. Styles and Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. Strowman put the three men away with ease and shook hands with Rollins to close out the show.
Last year, Strowman got a handful of chances to become the new Universal Champion. He cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to challenge Roman Reigns for the title at Hell in a Cell, but the match ended in a no contest after both superstars were attacked by Lesnar.
Strowman then squared off against Lesnar for the title at Crown Jewel, but thanks to assistance from Baron Corbin, the Beast Incarnate was able to retain his title. Nine months later, Strowman seems destined to get yet another shot at finally winning the championship that's eluded him all this time.
What This Means
WWE has gone back and forth between making Strowman a main eventer and placing him in the mid-card picture. With few suitable options for Rollins, it makes sense to pit The Monster Among Men against The Architect. Both are main event and babyface superstars, and there's little doubting their ability to put together an excellent program.
