Wilson Ramos has been traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in the bid for the National League East pennant.

The announcement comes from the Phillies’ Twitter page which confirmed that Ramos will come over from the Tampa Bay Rays for “cash considerations” and a player to be named at a later date. Wilson is currently on the 10-day disabled list with a hamstring injury

With a batting average of .297, 14 home runs, and 53 RBIs only 124 days into the 2018 season, the Venezuelan catcher adds another hot bat to the Philadelphia lineup. This move adds two veteran hitters to an already potent offense alongside the recent addition of Asdrubal Cabrera from the New York Mets this week.

Ramos has previously played for the Minnesota Twins and Washington Nationals before signing a two-year, $12.5 million contract with the Rays in December of 2016. He missed the first three months of the 2017 season thanks to a torn ACL in his right knee he received back in September 2016.

Upon his 2017 return, Ramos struggled for his first 35 at-bats, only averaging .194. However, he returned to form for the remaining 29 games, hitting at .330. He ended the 2017 season at a respectable .260, with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs despite only playing for 64 games.

The trade could also be seen as a strategic move, preventing him from returning to the Washington Nationals to bring up their dreary catching retinue as they currently sit 5.5 games behind the Phillies.

Joining the capable Jorge Alfaro, who's currently batting .254, also gives the Phillies a quality option of fielding catchers should one be on the disabled list as Ramos currently is. Ramos recently told reporters that he could return to the field as early as two weeks from now.

The Phillies' dugout is also reported to have acquired left-hander Aaaron Loup from the Toronto Blue Jays for Jacob Waguespack, a Triple-A pitcher. The deal closed shortly before Tuesday's 4 p.m. EST non-waiver trade deadline.
