Renee Young will be the first to admit that she didn't perform well as a commentator for WWE, specifically when given the shot on Raw. She wasn't awful, but the job wasn't a good fit and she didn't enjoy the role very much.

In talking to the Gorilla Position podcast, Young detailed why that gig didn't work out and her issues as part of the RAW commentary team. Overall she did not enjoy her time behind the announce desk as she found the constant pressure too much to overcome.

When she was first asked to fill in, the idea wasn't that the gig would be full-time. But, after she did a sufficient job in an environment where no one put any pressure on her to hit it out of the park, she was offered a permanent role on the team. Excited to be the first woman to be a full-time commentator, she quickly learned she was on her own, even after WWE realized she didn't actually have commentary experience.

Everyone expected her to be caught up and she was being given orders over the headset while trying to learn as if she was a pro. It was just too much and there was no one she could get help from. She said:

“Yeah, it was just tough. It was tough and it was a long year. I went into it very unprepared. I did commentary in NXT once years prior to that and it was fairly short stint, I was not doing it in the time in between there [Performance Center]. I was not getting in reps. It just sorta happened.”

Young Couldn't Find A Mentor

When she tried to reach out to others to get better, Young said no one could or would take the time to help her. She said it was difficult because everyone was just too busy and she was stuck trying to learn and improve while WWE was throwing her into the deep end on a weekly basis.

It's too bad too because Young has that "it" quality about her as a host. She's much happier now as the host of WWE Backstage.
