The Revival, as well as Mike and Maria Kanellis, have reportedly all requested to be released from their WWE contracts.
There was a time in the wrestling business where WWE was the be all end all. The ultimate goal for anyone breaking into the business. There was even a period for a long time where it was the only promotion that a performer could make money with. After Vince McMahon bought out WCW and ECW.
Those times have now passed and wrestling is going through something of a boom period. The men and women of the business are making good money in Impact, New Japan, Ring Of Honor, end even as unattached stars working the independent circuit. That's why WWE needs to start thinking more carefully about how it uses some of its Superstars, especially with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling.
In fact, rumors have been rife this week regarding WWE Superstars who have asked to leave the company. Surprise surprise, the rumors surround wrestlers that haven't been booked to the best of their abilities. Bodyslam.net has reported that The Revival has asked to be released from their current contracts. On the back of that news, Pro Wrestling Sheet has reported that Mike and Maria Kanellis have also asked to leave the company.
None of the four names mentioned above have been used in a way that they perhaps envisioned while with WWE, at least on the main roster. Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder were massive stars in NXT, but Mr. McMahon doesn't seem to understand the pair's appeal. Meanwhile, Mike and Maria's WWE run has been a little bit stop-start and now the couple is on 205 Live.
As touched upon above, if these four Superstars have indeed requested to be released, we could be seeing the first wrestlers leaving WWE to join up with AEW. Perhaps the most exciting prospect if that speculation does come true is we will finally get to see The Revival versus The Young Bucks. Even though the teams have never even been in the same promotion before, they have had a years-long heated rivalry online.
