Rey Mysterio hasn't been seen on WWE programming since he arrived as a surprise entry at the January Royal Rumble pay-per-view. There have been different reports about his future, ranging from heading to Impact Wrestling to coming back to the WWE, and so on.

The Tennessean reported on the weekend that Mysterio was heading over to Aro Lucha, working as a wrestler and owner. But Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio is also reporting that Mysterio has been negotiating a contract with the WWE.

It remains to be seen if that contract is finalized. In a December interview with ESPN, Mysterio did say that he feels the need to go back to WWE one last time, but he also enjoys life as an independent contractor who can set his own schedule.

In February, Mike Johnson PWInsider.com reported that Mysterio prefers to work part-time, but the WWE wants him full-time. Johnson noted Mysterio has undergone numerous knee surgeries, so it's easy to understand why he doesn't want to commit full-time.

Rey Mysterio is also 43 years of age and has two children, with son Dominic training to become a wrestler as well. The full-time WWE schedule is demanding, with superstars traveling year-round, so it could be very tough for officials to convince Mysterio to accept a full-time contract.

After leaving the Mexican-based AAA promotion, Mysterio worked in the independent circuit, and was reportedly close to signing with Impact Wrestling. But PWInsider reported that though a contract was close, Mysterio's agent never got the deal finalized.

A two-time World Heavyweight Champion, 2006 Royal Rumble winner and future Hall of Famer, Mysterio could certainly be used to help boost the Cruiserweight and mid-card divisions once again. Despite the aforementioned age and knee injury history, he's shown the ability to still put on high quality matches.

Whether or not a contract can be signed with WWE, however, remains to be seen. For now, the WWE Universe can only stand on its toes and hope that the two parties can find middle ground.
