Samoa Joe and Ricochet demonstrated what mid-card title matches can be when given half a chance at Stomping Grounds.
For the most part, the first ever Stomping Grounds card felt like a rehash of matches we had already seen. Baron Corbin getting another title shot, Lacey Evans and Becky Lynch going at it again, and Roman Reigns' WrestleMania rematch. However, one first time ever match, at least in WWE, caught our eye.
That match was Ricochet versus Samoa Joe for the US Title. The One And Only earned the chance to take on Joe this past week on Raw. Ricochet outlasted four other Superstars in an elimination match. However, right after his win, Joe stormed the ring and punished the number one contender for doing so.
On Sunday night, Ricochet had the chance to get some well-earned revenge. As we expected, the match was a knockdown, drag-out brawl. What we wanted Joe versus Rey Mysterio to be at WrestleMania had the latter's knee injury not prevented that from being so. It was also a match where we couldn't call the result which only added to the action.
Shortly after Joe avoided a 630 from the challenger, Ricochet hit the champ with a Codebreaker. That left Joe in the dropzone once again, and this time Ricochet didn't miss. The former NXT North American Champion hit Joe with the 630 and covered him for the three count. Once he got back through the curtain, we were shown various Superstars congratulating Ricochet, including Seth Rollins and Triple H.
WWE has a real opportunity now. A chance to make the US Title mean something again. Due to Mysterio's injuries, the chance to do that hasn't been available for a couple of months. However, Ricochet's match with Joe and his series with Cesaro shows how good he can be, and now he has the US Title to add to the mix. Some sort of rivalry between all three of those men that runs over the course of the summer would make for some terrific matchups. We'd even be okay with the title changing hands a couple of times too.
