By now, we all know what went down at WrestleMania 34, including the surprisingly top-notch mixed tag team match where Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey defeated Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. But it wasn’t always the Monday Night Raw GM whom WWE had in mind as Rousey’s teammate. A few people were rumored to step up as her partner, but one of them, as recently confirmed, was none other than the man who first introduced the former UFC Bantamweight Champion to the WWE Universe at WrestleMania 31The Rock.

Last week, The Rock spoke to KISS FM UK, mainly to promote his new movie, Rampage, but also to discuss a few other topics, including the latest updates on his status as an occasional WWE wrestler. He admitted that sometime in February, he and Vince McMahon were in discussions for a potential WrestleMania appearance, and the one thing McMahon specifically suggested for the “People’s Champion” was the aforementioned mixed tag team match, where he would be teaming with Rousey.

According to The Rock, the only thing that was stopping him from appearing at this year’s WrestleMania was a prior commitment where he had to be in China. However, he opened up the possibility that he would make an appearance at WrestleMania 35.

“We couldn't make it work this time because I was in Shanghai. But, Who knows down line?," said The Rock.

WrestleMania 34 marked the second straight 'Mania where The Rock was not available to compete or make a special appearance. He was last seen on the Show of Shows at WrestleMania 32 in 2016, where he participated in a segment with The Wyatt Family, and defeated Erick Rowan in just six seconds. His appearance the year before, however, was far more impactful, as he called Rousey to the ring before they both teamed up to take out Stephanie McMahon and Triple H, with Rousey memorably locking Stephanie in an armbar three years before she did the same thing in an actual 'Mania match.

Many people complain about WWE's tendency to bring back part-time talents or celebrities to WrestleMania, in hopes of increasing ticket sales, buyrates, network subscriptions, or other pertinent statistics related to WWE's post-'Mania bottom line. The Rock is both a part-time WWE talent and a celebrity, but it's hard to argue with his ability to pump up the crowd, whether it be casual or hardcore fans. Due to his Hollywood career, he's had quite the busy schedule as of late, but we do hope to see him electrifying audiences like he often does, at WrestleMania 35.
