Last night, the Washington Wizards defeated the Houston Rockets in overtime, 135-131. In the game, Rocket guard James Harden scored 54 points. And while a 50-point game would often be the highlight of a game, they have become almost common in the NBA this year.

But, something that isn't common—because it has never happened before—is the record amount of points scored by the backcourt players on both teams: Harden (54) and Eric Gordon (36) for the Rockets and John Wall (36) and Bradley Beal (32) for the Wizards. Adding it all up those four players dropped a total of 158 points in the game - the most ever in a game in the history of the league!

And in setting the record they left the previous top-scoring backcourts in the dust. The old record was set in 2016 in a game between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Toronto Raptors which the Raptors won 117-115. That game also included a 50-point game by a member of the losing team's backcourt, Damian Lillard (50), CJ McCollum (24). For Toronto DeMar DeRozan scored 38 and Kyle Lowry dropped 28.

Looking at individual backcourt records the 90 points put up by Harden and Gordon actually lands them in second place on the all-time list of points-in-a-game. They got real close though. The record is the 94 scored by the L.A. Lakers backcourt on Jan.22, 2006. On that day Smush Parker scored 13 points and that was the game that Kobe scored his career-high 81 points against the Raptors.

Another interesting fact pointed out by ESPN is that with last night's game James Harden now has three 50-point games in the last two seasons in which his team has lost. For the entire rest of the NBA, the number of games lost by teams with a guy getting 50 points is just two!

What This Means

The mega-scoring in the NBA just continues. With the new rules they implemented this season, the NBA obviously wanted more scoring (assuming that is what the fans want) but we're not sure they expected this much.

And as for the Rockets. While they started the season off a little slow, they do look to be back to their good 'ol " loads-of-offense-very-little-defense" ways.
