It was Roman Reigns' idea to turn heel when he returned to WWE after being on the sidelines for five months.

Roman Reigns' return and subsequent title win has been one of the most discussed topics in wrestling for the past couple of weeks. Love it or hate it, The Big Dog is back, and he is your Universal Champion. What's more, he's a heel, something fans have been clamoring for since The Shield broke up the first time around.

Vince McMahon appears to have been so adamant that Reigns was going to be the face of WWE, he has refused to have his prize asset turn heel. It's the same reason why John Cena never got the heel treatment. Which is why it came as such a shock when Reigns returned at SummerSlam and was acting in a very heelish manner.

The dust has settled, and according to Wrestling Observer Newsletter, turning Reigns heel was not McMahon's idea. It wasn't even Paul Heyman's. The Big Dog himself was the one who asked to come back as a bad guy. We're not sure whether he had to convince the boss to make the call, and if he did, what McMahon had in mind for the former WWE Champion upon his return if it wasn't a heel turn.

It's also unclear exactly how deep Reigns went with his idea for a heel turn. It certainly seems as if being paired with Heyman was happenstance rather than a meticulously laid out plan. Since Brock Lesnar is out of contract, and Heyman is no longer the creative director of Raw, WWE had two choices. Pay Heyman a lot of money to be a consultant, or have him fill a new role on-screen.

The return of Reigns and his want to turn heel provided the perfect opportunity to tick all of Heyman's empty boxes. As for how the new venture is going, so far, so good. As we highlighted above, this is a move fans have wanted to see from Reigns for a while. He has done a terrific job of it so far too, although these are still early days. It's also refreshing to hear Reigns was the one who wanted this to happen, and he has the sway backstage to make it happen.
