Rusev and Lana have endured plenty of ups an downs during their time together in WWE, but the popular wrestling couple may explore new opportunities.
A source told WWE insider Brad Shepard that Rusev and Lana may choose not to sign new deals with the company. The pair haven't made a final decision yet, but Shepard noted that Rusev and Lana are "weighing their options."
Many WWE superstars have been linked to joining AEW, and Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio recently said he wouldn't be surprised if Rusev wound up there, believing both AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling "would want" the Bulgarian Brute.
Rusev and Lana haven't held back in voicing their displeasure with WWE, either. The former opened up about his disappointment in losing the United States Championship. Rusev said he had hoped to make the title "bigger".
Along with the belt, Rusev expressed that he was worried about getting "lost." Lana vowed that she and her husband would "knock on Vince McMahon’s door." It seems like no matter the effort, the WWE chairman has simply ignored the requests from Rusev and Lana.
"Rusev Day" swept began sweeping over the WWE Universe in late 2017, and the Bulgarian Brute saw his merchandise sales skyrocket last year. Despite the massive surge in popularity, Rusev didn't see much of a push from Vince and the creative team.
Luckily for Rusev and Lana, AEW and NJPW would certainly be able to provide better opportunities if they decided to leave WWE. For whatever reason, Vince doesn't seem intent on pushing Rusev again, so it wouldn't be the least bit surprising if he and Lana chose to leave for another company.
What This Means
You have to feel sorry for both Rusev and Lana here. The former has done everything he could to try and receive a main event push. He lost plenty of weight, enhanced his in-ring skills and continually did what was asked of him. But Rusev is just another massive talent that WWE is wasting, and he and Lana deserve the chance to shine elsewhere.
