Shane 'Hurricane' Helms was one of the most popular WWE cruiserweights in the 2000s thanks to his popular "superhero" gimmick that won the fans over almost immediately.

Hurricane put his name on the wrestling map with a shocking victory against The Rock during the March 10, 2003 episode of Monday Night Raw. He would eventually form a tag team with the late Rosey - and they became the beloved 'Superheroes' duo that took home the World Tag Team Championships at one point. Hurricane Helms would take home a pair of Cruiserweight titles plus the WWF European and Hardcore Championships throughout his career. His character was also named "Best Gimmick" by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter in 2001.

With the exception of a surprise return at this year's Royal Rumble, The Hurricane gimmick has been out of WWE for nearly a decade, but it's a character Helms continued to use in the various promotions he's performed in since.

In an exclusive interview with TheSportster, Helms explained that when he was wrestling outside of the WWE, the pressure was mounting from fans and management to bring Hurricane back:

"I tried [wrestling without the mask] when I did Lucha Libre USA because everyone had a mask I thought 'to stand out, I’ll take mine off.' I called myself the Shane Event, but the crowd was chanting ‘Hurricane’ the whole time."

And even in Impact when I was doing the whole manager thing, it was a constant barrage of Hurricane comments. The character was just so successful that people are just not going to forget that I was The Hurricane. I think in the last couple of years, I had one company try to book me as Gregory Helms. I told them ‘I’ll do it, but as a professional, I’ve got to tell you, people want The Hurricane.’"

Helms continued:

"It just shows that it works. People still chant Three Count. And we only did Three Count for nine months. I think people in some people’s heads we did it for years, but it was only nine months.

That was back in 2000, by 2001 we were done with Three Count. And now 18 years later, there will be a Three Count chant and I have to break out and dance in the middle of a match."

Helms is set to compete for the Ring of Honor promotion, with a pair of dates booked for June. It begins on June 15, 2018, when he, Delirious and Cheeseburger square off Shane Taylor, Punishment Martinez, and Bully Ray. The next night on June 16, 2018, he and Delirious take on The Addiction yet again. He'll return for one final appearance on June 30, 2018.

And thanks to the massive success and popularity of his gimmick, The Hurricane will not be going away any time soon. A kind reminder to his future opponents that they better stand back — a hurricane is coming through.
