Io Shirai had her chance to dethrone Shayna Baszler at NXT TakeOver XXV, but did she prevail?

More than seven months ago, Shayna Baszler became the first woman in NXT history to win the Women's Championship twice. As she quite rightly pointed out prior to her latest defense, everyone that has come after her since has departed NXT. Ember Moon, Nikki Cross, and her fiercest nemesis to date inside a wrestling ring, Kairi Sane.

During her rivalry with Sane, Baszler made The Pirate Princess's best friend Io Shirai watch on as the champ and her fellow Horsewomen tortured her. That's why Baszler and Shirai's match at NXT TakeOver XXV was an extremely personal one. On top of all that animosity, it was Shirai's first one on one match for the NXT Women's Championship.

While they didn't begin the match at ringside, when things started to look bad for Baszler, those aforementioned Horsewomen made their way to the ring. However, before they could get there, Candice LeRae cut them off at the pass. Amid all the chaos at ringside, things got even more chaotic in the ring. After much back and forth, Baszler eventually locked in her patented chokehold on Shirai and The Genius Of The Sky had no other option but to tap.

The loss, on top of everything else, proved too much for Shirai to handle. After she had recovered from her loss, the Japanese star got back to her feet and continued to battle Baszler. Shirai urged LeRae to hand her a steel chair and she performed a moonsault on the champ with the weapon in hand. Baszler might have won, but she didn't look like a winner when all was said and done.

Nevertheless, Baszler's reign of terror over NXT's women's division continues. Plus, with Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke slowly becoming better wrestlers, her insurance policy only continues to get stronger. The longest NXT Women's Title reign is Asuka's at a staggering 522 days. Baszler's currently stands at 216. She might be a long way off The Empress, but right now, we can't see who can stop The Queen Of Spades.
