A game developer working for Yuke's has teased that an iconic WWE game from the 2000s might be getting remastered.

Anyone over the age of 25 who still plays video games likely looks back on their childhood and claims that they were better and simpler times. Game developers have clearly cottoned on to that belief. That's why games such as Final Fantasy VII and Abe's Odyssey have been remastered, and franchises such as Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. continue to get new additions.

When it comes to wrestling games, developers probably don't feel the need to remaster a game. We still get annual installments of WWE games courtesy of 2K after all. However, a large chunk of that aforementioned demographic vociferously disagrees with that. It feels like not much effort goes into today's WWE games, and the titles of the early 2000s are still remembered incredibly fondly.

RUMOR: Becky Lynch To Become WWE 2K's First Female Cover Star

Bryan Williams, a developer for game studio Yuke's, has hinted that a classic WWE game might be about to get the remaster treatment. Last week, Williams tweeted, "had a 6-hour meeting with my co-workers discussing plans for a project that I hope becomes a reality. We played a lot of Smackdown Here Comes The Pain." That naturally sent fans of the game into a frenzy.

Whether the remaster project is in the works or not, Williams now has fans hoping and clamoring for a 2019 version of the final installment in the SmackDown game franchise. The following year (2004) Yuke's and THQ's annual games would instead be labeled SmackDown vs. Raw. Although THQ no longer develops WWE games, Yuke's continues to work alongside 2K and has been helping to create wrestling games since the very first SmackDown title was released in 2000.

The biggest stumbling block we can see for this rumored project is how it might negatively affect the sales of WWE 2K20. In a perfect world, wrestling fans would buy both titles, regardless of release date. However, the cost of the titles and the fact that older fans are becoming disillusioned with the 2K franchise means people will probably pick one or the other. We also hope that THQ is involved should Here Comes The Pain be remastered.
