Luis Enrique already has a plan in mind to get the Spanish national team back to winning ways.

This summer's World Cup was one to forget for Spain. Just days before the tournament was due to begin, Real Madrid revealed that the national side's coach, Fernando Hierro would be taking the reigns at the Bernabeu once the World Cup was over. Clearly, nobody had told the Spanish Football Association as those in charge were not happy about the announcement.

Their reaction? They sacked him. That basically left Spain in a state of panic as an opening match with Portugal loomed. Julen Lopetegui took over and that first match ended 3-3. Some fans likely convinced themselves that the stand-in could perform a miracle and win it all but in reality that was never going to happen. Spain made it as far as the second round where they then lost to host nation, Russia.

It's time to look ahead for Spain now and new head coach, Luis Enrique was officially unveiled as the national team's boss on Thursday. The former Barcelona manager already has a vision for the team. According to Sky Sports, he wants to focus on evolution as opposed to revolution. "There are players coming through who we need to give confidence and we have to be as fair as possible to everyone," Enrique explained.

Enrique's mantra makes a lot of sense. Many national sides slip up at major tournaments because they place too much faith in the players who have taken them all the way before. Spain's new coach knows that isn't going to cut it at Euro 2020 and Qatar 2022. He also doesn't have that option in some cases. Both Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique have announced that they are done playing international soccer.

Thanks to the new UEFA Nations League starting this September, Enrique won't have long to wait to see his plan begin to unfold. Spain is naturally in the top division and will take on England and World Cup finalists Croatia both home and away. Perform well in the Nations League and it can earn you a spot at Euro 2020 early on.
