Kevin Owens fell short of capturing the Universal Championship for the second time in his career at Sunday's TLC pay-per-view but he won't have to wait long for another opportunity.

On Monday morning, WWE.com announced that Owens will challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship on the Christmas edition of SmackDown Live in a Steel Cage match.

The rematch will take place just days after Owens lost a thrilling Tables, Ladders & Chairs match to Reigns at TLC, thanks in large part to Reigns receiving help from his cousin Jey Uso.

Uso was able to prevent Owens from snagging the Universal Championship on numerous occasions, and Reigns managed to overcome a determined opponent to keep his title reign intact.

SmackDown won't air live this week; the company will instead tape the show on Tuesday night and air it on Christmas day.

The Owens-Reigns feud has been full of strong promos and great drama in the ring. There have been plenty of chair shots and broken tables during their program, and now we get to see them clash inside a steel cage.

It'll be interesting to see how much longer the Owens-Reigns program runs for. WWE is reportedly planning a Reigns-Daniel Bryan Universal Championship match for the January Royal Rumble pay-per-view, but plans can always change.

The Owens-Reigns program has been highly entertaining thus far with no shortage of compelling buildup, segments and intensity. So it wouldn't be surprising if the Reigns-Owens feud extended into Royal Rumble season. We'll just have to see how it plays out.

This Should Be An Exciting Match

It's highly unlikely that Reigns will lose the Universal Championship any time soon. He'll most certainly retain against Owens on SmackDown Live, but it should be a thrilling match nonetheless. Their TLC showdown was one of the best WWE matches of 2020, and the encore could be even better.
