The Washington Nationals frustrations have been mounting in a disappointing 2018 season, but things truly reached a boiling point during Friday's 8-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Star pitcher Stephen Strasburg was pulled after just 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits, two walks and six earned runs. Fellow ace Max Scherzer went to talk to Strasburg in the dugout, and it led to a heated confrontation between the All-Stars.

According to Mark Zuckerman of MASN.com, manager Davey Martinez brought both pitchers into his office following the game, seemingly to talk things out and put the ugly meltdown behind them.

Scherzer told reporters that it was "part of family," and declined to detail what the meeting was about. Martinez also offered little information about the trip to his office, but said "Things are good," between Strasburg and Scherzer, emphasizing that this happens between players on the same team from time to time.

While the Nationals were seemingly able to resolve the matter between Scherzer and Strasburg, the team picked up another frustrating loss, as their bid at a third consecutive NL East division title continues to dwindle.

Entering play on Saturday, the Nationals are 6.5 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for first in the division, and six games out of the wild card race. At this point, the sliding Nationals are going to need a miracle to get into the postseason, which looks like a pipe dream at this point.

Star slugger Bryce Harper is in the midst of a woeful campaign, and it's widely expected that he'll leave Washington to sign a lucrative deal in free agency. As such, many believe 2018 is the final year for the Nats to truly contend for a World Series championship with the current core, but it looks impossible at this point.

Good on Strasburg and Scherzer to put their meltdown behind them, but that's not going to be enough to turn the ship around.
