Robert Sarver has reportedly "threatened" to pull the Suns from Phoenix and head elsewhere.

The Suns are now believed to be considering a move if they don't get a new arena deal and, according to the Arizona Central's Laurie Roberts, the team owner has told city officials that the team could pack up and leave.

The development stems from a decision taken by Phoenix Mayor Thelda Williams and councilwomen Laura Pastor and Debra Star to push back a vote on a $150 million contribution to the renovation of the Talking Stick Resort Arena.

On Wednesday, the city council unanimously agreed to postpone the vote until January 23 in order for residents to attend five public meetings held around Phoenix to discuss the project.

According to Steven Hsieh of the Phoenix New Times, the team would put up $80 million of the proposed $230 million and would cover any overrun. The Suns also have plans to construct a new practice facility that would leave the arena free to host events such as concerts and circuses year round.

A survey carried out by Marson Media and Data Orbital found that 66 percent of Phoenix voters are against using public funds on renovations for said arena.

And Roberts reports that Sarver is considering moving to either Las Vegas or Seattle.

"Sarver’s talking about moving," the council member told me. "He basically told me the team will go (if they don't get a renovated arena). Vegas and Seattle were the two he talked about."

City Manager Ed Zuercher has confirmed that Suns officials have said that a move is possible.

“I don’t consider it a threat," Zuercher said. "They’ve talked about what their options are. Robert has never has threatened me. He’s mentioned that there are other cities that are looking for NBA teams."

Meanwhile, Suns president and CEO Jason Rowley has released a statement claiming that the team wants to remain in Phoenix despite the vote delay.

“We have learned that a request has been made to continue the agenda item on the arena renovation until a council meeting on Jan. 23," the statement reads.

"We very much look forward to publicly discussing the many ways in which Talking Stick Resort Arena benefits Downtown Phoenix and our community at large, and answering any questions the Council and their constituents may have about the arena and the proposed renovation. Our priority remains being in Downtown Phoenix long-term, and we’re excited about the opportunity that lies ahead.”

What This Means

Sarver has been one of the most criticized team owners in the NBA since taking over the Suns 14 years ago and he was ranked the worst owner in ESPN's standings in 2016. The Suns were also branded the league's worst organization.

The Suns haven't made the playoffs since 2010 and they currently own the worst record in the NBA with just four wins from their first 28 games.

A move to another city would probably give them a market boost and Seattle would likely be grateful to land another NBA franchise. They might not be so hot over Sarver, however.
