The Phoenix Suns have waived point guard Isaiah Canaan less than a year after acquiring him.

The 27-year-old started 15 games for the team this season, but with Devin Booker having established himself at the point, it appears that Canaan's contributions were no longer needed.

Canaan averaged 3.3 points and 3.2 assists per contest over the last six games, making just 25 percent of his attempts. And his sub-par performances are more than likely what led to his release.

Shams Charania of The Athletic broke the news of the player getting cut on Wednesday, and it was later confirmed by the NBA via their official website.

"The Phoenix Suns have waived guard Isaiah Canaan.

"Canaan appeared in 19 games, 15 as a starter at point guard this season, but his playing time diminished as Devin Booker took over the starting point guard spot lately.

"Canaan is in his eighth NBA season. He has played for Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston and Phoenix, averaging 8.4 points per game in his career. His season was cut short a year ago by a gruesome ankle injury.

"Phoenix did not make any corresponding roster move after waiving Canaan on Wednesday."

Canaan started the season as the Suns starting point guard but Booker was recently moved into the position while rookie Mikal Bridges has been thrust into the starting lineup.

"It was a business decision but I feel good about his future," head coach Igor Kokoskov told reporters after the loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night.

What This Means

The Suns haven't made any other changes to their roster but Markelle Fultz's name has been thrown around in the wake of Canaan's departure.

There are now two open roster spots on the team and it is still unclear what general manager James Jones is looking to do. It is likely that he opts to make a trade, but there's also the possibility of calling Jawun Evans up from G-League affiliate, the North Arizona Suns.
