Tony Khan declared prior to Dynamite on Wednesday that Taz would have announcement that could shake up the wrestling world. And, while it might not shake up the wrestling world, the news certainly was big.
Coming out for a promo with Brian Cage and teasing is client's match next week where Cage will take on Jon Moxley for the AEW Championship, Taz said he wasn't going to let his client walk into Fight for the Fallen without a title. His plan was to show Cage is the baddest "son of a b-tch in wrestling". To do that, Taz said Cagew would now hold something near and dear to Taz's heart and crowned him the FTW Champion.
The FTW Championship is a belt Taz carried with him as part of ECW. Known as the Extreme Championship Wrestling FTW (F-ck The World) Heavyweight Championship (also referred to as the Brooklyn World Championship), it was a belt that was never officially recognized or sanctioned by any one promotion. Paul Heyman gave the title to Taz because when he couldn't compete for the ECW Title and because it suited his "bad-ass, no-nonsense" attitude. For WWE fans, it was similar to the Million Dollar Championship in the WWF.
Taz pulled out the title and gave it to Cage on Wednesday, not necessarily making it clear about whether or not the title would ever be defended or if Cage would simply hold it as a part of his decor.
Is This Now An Officially Sanctioned AEW Title?
The announcers did say that the FTW Championship had come to AEW, but didn't note if it would be deemed an official title sanctioned by the company. Time will tell but it would seem like an odd choice considering they just added a TNT Championship and some of their EVP's have stated they weren't huge fans of having mid-card titles. This would give AEW two in only a couple of months.
Taz posted a message after his segment saying:
