Before he grew into the biggest movie star in all of Hollywood, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was among the most influential, beloved and admired figures in all of sports entertainment.

Ever since he left WWE to work in Hollywood 15 years  ago, The Rock has found a bit of time to come back to the squared circle. But those days are long over, because The People's Champion has decided it's time to hang up the wrestling boots.

Appearing on Live with Kelly and Ryan (h/t WrestlingInc.com), The Rock revealed that he recently decided to retire from wrestling altogether - when asked if he misses the business, and if he wishes he could balance it with acting.

"I miss wrestling, I love wrestling," The Rock said. "Yes, I do...I quietly retired from wrestling because I was lucky enough to have just a really wonderful career and accomplish what I wanted to accomplish, but there's nothing like a live crowd, a live audience, a live microphone as you both know."

This might come as a surprise to many wrestling fans, since The Rock has made a handful of WWE appearances in recent years. But aside from a match at WrestleMania 32 - in which he defeated Erick Rowan in just six seconds - The Rock's last real bout took place six years ago. That was at WrestleMania 29, where he lost to John Cena in a WWE Championship match.

The Rock isn't the only WWE superstar-turned-actor who announced his retirement this year. After losing to Triple H at WrestleMania 35, Dave Batista revealed that he was done wrestling as well. Like The Rock, Batista has starred in countless Hollywood hits, so he has every good reason to retire from wrestling altogether.

Along with 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, The Rock emerged as one of the premier superstars of the Attitude Era. His world-class in-ring and microphone skills went unmatched, and without The Rock, who knows if WWE would have survived the Monday Night Wars against WCW?

His impact on the wrestling business as a whole will never be forgotten, and we'll always be thankful for everything he did in the ring - for the sake of our entertainment. The Rock deserves all the praise in the world for being a model person in and out of the ring, and nobody should fault him for deciding that it was time to close the chapter on his wrestling career.

What This Means

The Rock will most certainly make more appearances in WWE down the road, just not in a wrestling capacity. Even though he hasn't wrestled in several years, we can say that Rock went out on a high note - headlining a WrestleMania against Cena and taking down Rowan in a matter of seconds. Not every WWE legend gets to go out on a high note, But Rock certainly did.
