The Undertaker has discussed the match in which he realized it was time to retire from professional wrestling. The former WWE superstar hung it up towards the end of 2020 after a 30-year metier, with his last match coming against AJ Styles in a cinematic affair branded a Boneyard Match.

That was the fight that really rang the message in, not the horror show against Goldberg in Saudi Arabia. There were plenty of fans who thought his retirement still meant the door was open for him to come back for another match, however, it was confirmed that The Deadman was well and truly done thereafter.

Taker spoke to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated in a recent interview, pointing to the Boneyard Match as the one that let him know it was over. He claimed to have realized that around halfway through the bout and, as he did not want to shortchange fans, decided to bring an end to his remarkable career.

“About halfway through that night with AJ, I knew that was it for me," he recalled. "It became really obvious throughout the course of that night that I could no longer physically do things the way I want to do them, and I refuse to ever shortcut our fans.”

The Undertaker Took Measures To Stay Away From WrestleMania

The future WWE Hall of Famer did not go into training last year just to ensure he did not have a change of heart heading into WrestleMania 37. He revealed he usually starts training for the Show of Shows around October but did not do so this time around just so he wouldn't get tempted to work another match.

Of course, there's always the possibility of a return - that's just how it works with WWE.
