The Oklahoma City Thunder won their fifth straight game of the season, having played the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night. But it was a bittersweet affair as Russell Westbrook could not see out the contest, leaving the floor in the third quarter after sustaining an injury.

The explosive guard needed to be helped off the court following a bad injury to his left ankle by landing on the foot of Anthony Davis. And it is believed that he could miss more games after starting the season late due to a summer surgery on his right knee.

Per ESPN's Royce Young, the player has undergone X-rays on the joint and, fortunately, they came back negative. However, there is no timeline for his return.

"We'll see," Thunder head coach Billy Donovan said after the game. "Generally, with those things, we'll see how he does in the morning. But it's a sprained ankle. Hopefully, he'll be OK."

Westbrook had jumped for a rebound against Davis and came down awkwardly, rolling his ankle as his foot came off the Pelicans' center. He writhed around in pain before limping to the locker room with help from trainers.

"Russ has a pretty high pain tolerance, so I knew it was something that was serious," teammate Paul George said. "I was just hoping it wasn't his knee. I thought I saw him holding his knee. I think we can all say it's unfortunate, we can all say as bad as it was we're happy it wasn't the knee and that it was just an ankle sprain."

Losing Westbrook seemed to galvanize the rest of the Thunder players, who played with a higher sense of urgency to ultimately win 122-116 after having their best player exit the game.

"When he went out, I thought our guys competed and played extremely hard," Donovan added.

The Thunder won't practice on Tuesday, before they head to Cleveland for Wednesday's game against the Cavaliers, so they aren't likely to provide any updates on Westbrook's status before the game.

The player has averaged 25.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.8 assists a game so far this season. He scored 17 points, grabbed 7 boards and made 9 assists in his 25 minutes on Monday night.
