Jimmy Butler's name is the one on everyone's lips these days, yet that really shouldn't be the case at this point in time.

The guard, who requested a trade weeks ago, has been the subject of discussion since then as many situations have arisen in the wake of his demands.

Butler made it clear to the Minnesota Timberwolves that he did not wish to remain part of the team after playing just 59 games following his move from Chicago last season. But Tom Thibodeau, who operates as both the team's head coach and president of basketball operations, has refused to let go.

The Miami Heat were the team who most wanted the star guard and the interest was mutual, with Butler keen on moving to Florida. However, negotiations between the two organizations fell through last weekend as Thibodeau tried getting too much.

It has become quite the messy situation in Minnesota, yet Thibodeau's position could be understood when taking what he gave up to get Butler into consideration. The head coach allowed the Chicago Bulls to have Kris Dunn, Zack LaVine, as well as a draft pick who we now refer to as Lauri Markkanen, so it would leave him looking very silly if he didn't get a proper return on the swingman.

While the team owner wants Jimmy gone, as do many of the top brass in the Timberwolves head office, Thibodeau is ready to weather the storm throughout next season with the disgruntled Butler, who has already struck chaos trouble since returning to practice.

The player stormed into last Wednesday's practice and took over the joint as he spewed venom in all directions. Teammates, coaches, management and ownership were all made targets. And, on top of that, he beat the rest of their starters leading a team of third stringers while reminding them of their apparent "softness".

"I think that I was honest," Butler told ESPN's Rachel Nichols. "Was I brutally honest? Yes. But I think that's the problem. Everybody's so scared to be honest with one another. If you didn't like the way that I handled myself in practice, one of the players come up to me.

"Somebody say something. Anybody. I'm not going to take offense. It's not personal. 'Jimmy, you shouldn't have done that.' 'Yeah, you probably right.' I would have said, 'I ain't hooped in I don't know how long.' I'm passionate about it. I love the game, and I love to win. And that's all I was out there doing, was competing."

This is pretty embarrassing for both parties, but more so the Timberwolves and, by extension, the NBA. Of course, there's nothing the league can really do about this and it's up to the team and their star to figure things out, as commissioner Adam Silver rightly pointed out last week. But this isn't a good look for the league and it's certainly sending out a pretty strong message.

The saga has even resulted in reports of Heat president Pat Riley swearing at the Timberwolves coach. Riley has since denied the claims, but they floated around for at least a day before they were rebuffed

This could have been avoided if Thibodeau had simply honored the wishes of his paymasters. Aside of Butler, there's still a pretty solid core, with the likes of Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins kicking about - plus they would have gotten a good enough player (or more) to add to their roster in exchange for Butler.

The latest development as it relates to the situation is a bit more positive, thankfully. The Atletic's Shams Charania has reported that Butler trained again on Sunday and is expected to play in the Timberwolves' season opener against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.

If he does end up staying, it's going to be quite the long campaign for Thibs and the rest of his squad -  unless, of course, he manages to iron things out with the outspoken shooting guard.
