During the post-show for Double or Nothing, AEW announcer Tony Shiavone answered a question about Sting, plus shared news on a number of other topics, perhaps spoiling AEW's plans going forward.
As AEW typically does, they held a post-show after Saturday's pay-per-view, this edition hosted by the company's regular commentator Tony Shiavone. As he scrolled through questions as quickly as he could, he addressed a number of topics including when fans might return, if Darby Allin was alright after his nasty bump off the ladder, and when Britt Baker might return.
Saying Allin was fine and Baker might be back in six weeks time — which is great news considering some thought she'd be out six-to-nine-months —, one of the more interesting comments slipped out. In fact, if you weren't paying close attention, you might have missed it. A fan asked if AEW had reached out to Sting. Shiavone responded, "I don't believe so."
You can see the video clip below:
There were rumors that the former WCW, Impact, and WWE star might appear at Double or Nothing. He did not. Even after the show, some fans were likely still holding out hope that he eventually would. It sounds as though he will not.
Revealing that AEW hasn't even contacted Sting about an appearance, it sounds like the company has decided not to bring in one of the biggest stars in the last twenty years, even for a special moment as they've done in the past with stars like Bret Hart or Mike Tyson (who did what many thought Sting might do on Saturday).
Maybe Tony Isn't The Best Host For This Show
The often distracted Shiavone started the video dropping a few f-bombs and spilled a lot of information AEW was likely hoping to keep on the down-low. They'd advertised that they'd reveal Baker's injury status earlier in the PPV for this Wednesday's Dynamite, likely as a way to draw viewers. ( in his defense, Tony Khan said something similar in his media scrum). Still, Shiavone pretty much let the cat out of the bag. AEW has also teased Sting references, even talking about him during the Cody Rhodes match. Shiavone essentially put those rumors to rest.
As a result, while it appears Sting's contract with WWE is over, there is good news. The WWE Network will be airing a special on Sting next week. So too, Kurt Angle will be making an appearance this Wednesday for NXT so nothing is ever over in WWE. Maybe fans will still get the Sting vs. Undertaker after all?
