Fans and pundits alike are split on whether Mesut Ozil was really ill this weekend or if he and new Arsenal boss Unai Emery have already fallen out.

This summer and this season is very much a period of change for Arsenal. Towards the end of the 2017/18 season, Arsene Wenger announced that he would be stepping down as Arsenal manager after 22 years in charge at the club. Unai Emery is the man who has taken up the reigns at the Emirates but fans will have to be patient as the new boss settles in and finds his feet.

Emery has had something of a baptism of fire when it comes to the Premier League. The Gunners' opening game was against defending champions Manchester City, and a week later Emery and his men had to take on London rivals Chelsea. Both of those ended in defeat for Arsenal, however, the side picked up its first win of the season versus West Ham United this past Saturday, winning 3-1 at home.

While Arsenal fans will be happy that the club's season is up and running, some might be worried about the absence of Mesut Ozil from the side. Emery told press that the German midfielder was absent from the squad with a cold. However, there have been conflicting rumors that the actual reason the club captain was not in the squad to face West Ham was because he has fallen out with his manager.

Andy Dunn spoke about the situation on Sky Sports' Sunday Supplement, stating that Emery can't afford to fall out with Ozil. "I think Arsenal have not got anywhere near enough quality players to afford to have their highest-quality player frozen out," Dunn said on the show. The Mirror writer also believes that the whole situation seems very coincidental, especially since Ozil was at the Emirates for the match despite supposedly being unwell.

Soccer fans can be extremely fickle. Emery will have to do his utmost to win over the Arsenal fans, and even rumors that he is not playing one of the club's best players simply because they don't get along will not go down well. Whatever is true about his relationship with Ozil, it needs to be sorted quickly. One or two bad results with the captain missing from the team and fans will quickly start placing the blame on Emery.
