WWE appears to have replaced the snaps used to fasten the Universal Title with velcro and we have no idea why.

The designs of WWE championships have been a hot topic of conversation for decades. Everyone has their favorites. Plus, there are ones that tend to be universally loved while others are largely loathed. The winged eagle WWE Championship falls into the former category, while the spinner title of the same lineage is very much a part of the latter.

One title that falls somewhere between those two worlds is the Universal Championship. Introduced during the summer of 2016, the Universal Title is the latest of WWE's many World Championships. Since it is a Raw title, the strap is made of red leather. That shocked fans initially. So much so that it was met with boos when it was first unveiled.

We're not sure whether the design has grown on fans since then or they have just gotten used to it. Either way, two and a half years later, WWE has made a pretty significant change to the Universal Title. A fan pointed the alteration out on Twitter this week. The snaps used to fasten the title around the champion's waist appear to have been replaced with velcro.

If you didn't notice or don't believe us, you can see for yourself in the photo above. There are definitely no snaps on the title draped over Seth Rollins' shoulder, and what appears to be velcro in its place. A strange decision and one we can't logically think of an explanation for. Is WWE worried that Superstars won't be able to get the titles on fast enough in certain situations? Or perhaps this is WWE's most extreme cost-cutting measure to date? They did spend a lot on pyro at WrestleMania.

What we find particularly amusing about this unexplained change is the timing. 24 hours after Brock Lesnar loses the title and WWE effectively turns it into something that is child-friendly. We can imagine The Beast throwing the belt right back at whoever handed it to him if he had to fasten it using velcro. Perhaps that's why Lesnar threw the title at Vince McMahon at last year's WrestleMania. Mystery solved!
