Velveteen Dream wins the NXT North American Championship from Johnny Gargano on Wednesday's episode of NXT.

On tonight's NXT episode on the WWE Network saw The Velveteen Dream capture his first title in NXT when he won the North American Championship of the recently called-up Gargano. Triple H took to Twitter after the show and congratulated Dream on the big win.

Triple H wrote, "Believing you are absolutely everything you say you are is necessary if you want to be a champion. ...backing it up is what ACTUALLY makes you one. Congratulations to the NEW @WWENXT North American Champion, @VelveteenWWE. #DreamOVER"

The win comes after weeks of some controversial comments from Dream and disappointment that he hadn't yet been called up to the main roster. A couple of months ago, a number of NXT vets including Nikki Cross, Lars Sullivan and EC3 (among others) were promoted while Dream was not. Then, this past Monday, Tommaso Ciampa, Gargano, Aleister Black and Ricochet were added to the group of new talents on the main roster. Again, Dream was nowhere to be seen.

It appears WWE has plans for the controversial NXT Superstar and will need him on their brand to take a run with the title.

After his win, Dream said, " This is the Dream's moment. The Dream needs to clean this thing, filthy hands all over it. The Dream has to have a little time with this thing, he just got to know it. ... This is the Dream's moment, you don't get to be a part of it. Be gone!"

What This Means

Velveteen Dream is certainly deserving. He's been one of the most popular stars in NXT over the past year and while fans might have been upset he was overlooked, many will be happy he's being given a title and chance to run with it as one of the main stars on the arguably hottest brand in WWE. In the long run, this may be better for him.
