One day after an ugly 21-7 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Minnesota Vikings have fired offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The organization later announced that quarterback coach Kevin Stefanski will take over as offensive coordinator.

The Vikings, who were comfortably in a playoff spot just two weeks ago, have now lost their last two games and sit at 6-6-1. They're only half a game up on three other teams for the final wild card in the NFC. With only three games left on the regular season schedule, head coach Mike Zimmer decided it was time for change.

DeFilippo joined the Vikings this season after spending two years as quarterback coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. He won a Super Bowl 52 championship ring there last season, and was hired to replace Pat Shurmur - who took on the New York Giants' head coaching role.

Expectations were increasingly high for Minnesota this season, especially after they signed Kirk Cousins to a three-year, fully guaranteed $84 million contract. With Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs as playmakers, the Minnesota offense was to take a big time jump this year.

The Vikings have now lost three of their last four games, all road losses to playoff teams in the Seahawks, New England Patriots and Chicago Bears. The Vikings have totaled just 17 points over their last two games, and it took them out of contention for the NFC North - which the Bears are running away with.

What This Means

The Vikings are simply trying to save their season, and they hope a change at OC will do the trick. This team reached the NFC Championship Game with journeyman Case Keenum last year, so when they signed Cousins, it became a championship-or-bust season.

Minnesota still controls its own destiny for a playoff spot. They realistically need just two wins to get into the postseason. The Vikings will try to get back on track when they host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
