The Buffalo Bills were so badly embarrassed at home by the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday that it drove cornerback Vontae Davis into retirement.

Seriously.

According to The Athletic's Matthew Fairburn, Davis told teammate Lorenzo Alexander that he was removing himself out of the game and was retiring from football. Obviously, Alexander wasn't happy with his actions.

Though rookie quarterback Josh Allen put together a solid performance in his first NFL start (18 completions for 245 yards and a touchdown), the Bills were no match for an injury-ravaged Chargers team.

Though the final score was 31-20, the game was essentially over when the Chargers led 28-6 at halftime. Buffalo now moves to 0-2, in what was a frustrating performance following a brutal 47-3 road loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1.

Allen threw two interceptions and was sacked five times in the contest. The Bills took six penalties for 31 yards,  and the offense finished with a mere 293 total yards and just 15 first downs (rushing and passing).

Davis retires after a solid 10-year career that saw him get selected to the 2014 and 2015 Pro Bowls. He became a key part of the Indianapolis Colts following a 2012 trade, helping them reach the playoffs in 2012, 2013 and 2014. That included a trip to the 2014 AFC Championship Game, though it was a blowout loss to the New England Patriots.

Davis was a solid cornerback during his six seasons with the Colts, but he was released in the midst of the 2017 season. The Bills, coming off their first playoff berth in 18 years, signed Davis in the offseason. The hope was that he could help a secondary that has struggled since Doug Marrone left as head coach following the 2014 season.

The Bills are now 0-2, with a porous defense and awful offensive line. Davis' decision to retire could only be the start of what may be a very long season for a franchise that has struggled for two decades now.
